SND ANNOUNCES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

PROVIDENCE, R.I. July 19, 2004 - The Society for News Design is pleased to announce the appointment of Elise S. Burroughs as its new executive director. SND is a global organization representing the interests of more than 2,600 members in 50 countries. Burroughs succeeds Dave Gray, one of the founding members of SND and, for the last eight years, its executive director. Gray retired at the end of May.

Through annual workshops, local quick courses, publications and the world's premier news design showcase, The Best of Newspaper Design' Creative Competition, the organization has played a key role in shaping visual journalism and built recognition for the work of designers, art directors, design directors, graphic artists and photographers around the world.

"SND is lucky to get someone like Elise," said Susan Mango Curtis, SND president. "She has knowledge about the news business and an impressive track record in association management. Because of the volunteer nature of the organization and our global nature, we'll benefit from her communication skills, her enthusiasm and her ability to engage people in the process. I'm looking forward to working with her and I know the other officers and the members of the board are too."

Prior to joining SND, Burroughs was the director of technology conferences for the Newspaper Association of America, playing a key role in organizing the education program for NEXPO, and manager of that organization's New Media Federation. She also served as executive editor of NAA's Presstime magazine and has held similar leadership roles in publications for other organizations, including a stint as the publications director of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

"As media choices continue to increase and evolve, design becomes ever more important in helping individuals identify what is important to them," Burroughs said. "I have always been impressed with the Society for News Design's projects - the Best of Newspaper Design', the Annual Workshop, the Quick Courses and, more recently, the SND.ies. I am very excited about the opportunity to work with such a creative, talented group of journalists."

A native of Cincinnati, Burroughs holds a journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin.

The Society for News Design, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is located at 1130 Ten Rod Road, Suite F-104, North Kingstown, RI 02852-4177, USA. For more information, call (401) 294-5233, or visit the SND Web site, www.snd.org.
