216 pages in full colour with the best of world infographics in 2002, plus an in-depth interview by John Grimwade with legendary Nigel Holmes, previously the graphics director of Time Magazine, the author of many books and a living reference for the infographers of today.

Yesterday, volume number 11 of the Malofiej International Infographics Awards organised each year by the Spanish Chapter of the Society for News Design (SND-E) and the University of Navarre’s Faculty of Communication was presented in Pamplona. The event, held as part of the twelfth World Infographics Summit, was attended by Antoni Canal, director of the Index Books publishing house; designer Guillermo Nagore and Javier Errea, chairman of the SND-E, coordinator of the Malofiej awards and the books’ editor.

“For the last three years we have been attempting to provide infographers with something more than a list of prize winners. The volume now includes an in-depth interview with some of the most prominent figures in the field, and two or three monographs by infographers or university experts. Our ultimate aim is to launch an infographic year book which will become an essential point of reference for the field’s professionals. And I believe we are successful”, said Javier Errea, who also teaches Editing and Projects at the Faculty of Communication, and is the deputy director of the Mediacción consultancy firm.

The Malofiej 11 book, which will be on sale at a price of 40 euros, includes the work that won the gold, silver and bronze medals in the eleventh edition of the international infographics awards, held from May 4 to 9 at the University of Navarre. It also includes a CD Rom with the winners in the on-line and multimedia categories. The first prize, known as the Peter Sullivan prize, was awarded to a portfolio of local work presented by The New York Times.

There are also articles by Miguel Urabayen, honorary professor of Visual Journalism, on the hundredth anniversary of aviation; Javier Zarracina, who use to be in charge of infographics for the El Correo newspaper and has just joined the North American San Jose Mercury News, on the relationship between infographics and comics, and Alberto Cairo, the head of infographics for elmundo.es, son the development of on-line and multimedia infographics.

On the other hand, the twelfth World Infographics Summit was inaugurated on Wednesday evening in the Pamplona Planetarium, attended by a hundred professionals from 15 different countries. The sessions are taking place on Thursday and Friday, March 25 and 26, in the University of Navarre’s Social Science Building. The winners of the 12th International Awards will be announced on Friday March 26, selected from 1,250 works presented by 77 media from 18 different countries. The summit will be closed by illustrator Isidro Ferrer, the winner of the 2003 National Design Award.
